Karrantza, 2015
Video – 39:39 min – (Basque subtitles)

During the summer months of 2015, we took a tour of some of the farmhouses of the shepherds who maintain the Carranzana sheep breed with black faces; as well as meeting women who know the traditional spinning process of the valley; to learn about their work and share some of it through a video document.

An unforgettable experience, during the long conversations we had, we learned about many different issues. On the one hand, the farming families are visibly concerned about the future of these trades, which lack generational replacement. Not to mention tasks related to wool, such as spinning or carding. Nowadays, these trades are obsolete. In the entire Carranza Valley, we only found two women in their eighties who know how to do this job: Encarna and Femia.
Although they don’t practice it anymore. And the fact is that, today, as in many other places, in the Carranza Valley wool is thrown away… This document is part of our research work on the idea of rethinking new farmhouse models from a creative perspective.
